Long Beach Lifeguard Employment Opportunity
NON-CAREER OCEAN LIFEGUARD

The Non-Career Ocean Lifeguard examination will be held Sunday, March 18, 2007. The exam consists of two rigorous qualifying parts: a 1000-meter ocean swim and a 400-meter run-swim-run. Because of the rigorous nature of the qualifying exam, candidates must be in excellent physical condition. Information regarding the specific test date is usually available by the end of January. Requirements:
Successful completion of an interview and a physical examination prior to the 10-day, 96-hour training program.
Available to work the various work schedules; evenings, weekends, and holiday hours as required.
The commitment to work the entire summer season, approximately 11-12 weeks.

Qualifications:
No prior training or experience is required.
17 years of age as of July 1 of the current calendar year.
Proof of age required at the time of conditional employment offer (valid driver's license or birth certificate)
Any applicant under 18 years of age must possess a valid work permit from his/her high school, a high school diploma or a G.E.D. certificate.

Examples of Duties:
Watch a designated section of the beach and water from an assigned station; answer calls for help and perform rescue and resuscitation work; warn bathers of beach and water hazards; administer first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation; use and maintain rescue equipment; take charge of lost children; answer questions of beach visitors; advise regarding local beach and waterway related ordinances; serve as a crewmember or ride-along on rescue boats and in lifeguard vehicles; assist in salvage operations of small boats and their property; complete and maintain activity records; and perform other related duties as required.
