2010 Roger Coulter Intercrew Relay Results
For well over 20 years Long Beach Lifeguards have participated in an Intercrew Relay in which Lifeguards from the different areas have put their physical skills to the test against one another.
The Intercrew Relay was officially renamed in 2004 to honor Long Beach Lifeguard legend Roger Coulter. Lifeguards get a chance to show thier skills and will get bragging rights over the other athletes for another year. This particular relay brings out the competitors who are considered to be the best at their event in their area and even former United States Lifeguard National champions come to participate.
Lifeguard Teams:
1. West Beach
2. East Beach
3. Ancient Mariners: team of seasoned veteran guards who do not maintain a summer lifeguard schedule.
4. Marina Park/Boats combined team
5. Bayshore/Lagoon combined team
The relay consists of 4 different event legs, starting with the beach run and finishes with the 2-man dory race. Here is the order of the race:
1. Beach Run
2. Swim
3. Paddleboard
4. Two Man Dory
Always a great way to start off a summer of competition, the Roger Coulter Relay held at Bayshore provided plenty of action. The 2009 relay saw a very excited West Beach team win their first title in 5 years! The 2010 Roger Coulter Relay did not disappoint. The Run and the Swim didn't produce a clear favorite, but the paddleboard competitors opened up a sizable lead which put the West Beach in the front. An unfortunate turn of events put a West Beach doryman in the water and their lead was lost. Bayshore/Lagoon came out ahead and was first across the line!
