The Long Beach Lifeguard Alumni

Welcome to the Long Beach Lifeguard Alumni home page. We invite you to become a member. For some of you it may be returning to the old days when you were a paid Long Beach Lifeguard and for others it may be your first experience.

     Welcome!

Thank you for visiting the Long Beach Lifeguard Alumni Association web site.

Started to promote and keep the lifeguard ideals of Fun, Fellowship & Service alive, the Alumni Association is dedicated to creating an organization that all of the ex-Long Beach Lifeguards can participate in and be proud of.

Whether a lifeguard for a summer or two or a career lifeguard of many years service, our goal is to challenge you to keep involved with your past through current involvement in projects and programs that we can all be proud of.

With the recent LBLG 1906 – 2006 Centennial Event as the benchmark, we plan on expanding our involvement opportunities and community outreach events.  We can only do this with your support, feedback and involvement.

As an example, a past Board of Directors meeting minutes/newsletter is provided following this introduction as a sample overview of the many ongoing programs & projects in the works.  Please take a moment to read it over and give us your ideas & suggestions on how we can improve and better our goals.  (Members of the Alumni Association receive a current monthly B of D meeting minutes/newsletter as part of our ongoing organization communications.)

If you are not already a member of the Alumni Association, please consider joining.  Even if you don’t live in the area and cannot directly participate in the activities, your support will still be felt and we will do our best to keep you informed so that you can follow along and keep in touch with your friends and fellow Alumni.  Of course, if you are an out-of-towner, whenever you are in the area, you are invited to drop by the B of D meetings, the BBQ’s and other events, such as our annual Luau & Dance, and say HI!

Once a Lifeguard, always a Lifeguard!

Keep the “Wonder Years” alive and join the Alumni Association.

Fraternally yours, your Alumni Board of Directors.

Long Beach Lifeguard Alumni News Letter

L.B. Lifeguard Alumni Board of Directors meeting December 15, 2006

&

Lecture & Luncheon Holiday Mixer

President Dick Miller, Vice President Fred Simpson and a mob of Alumni members, spouses, hourly lifeguards, full time lifeguards and more than a few people hanging on the bar that I am not sure of.

Wow! – what a turn out.  Our normally very serious and orderly (?) B of D meeting turned into one great social hour(s)!  Before Dick completely lost control, which – as usual – didn’t take long, we did discuss some Alumni business:

The next Lecture & Luncheon meeting will be during April and we are looking for input concerning topic ideas.  Please let us know your thoughts.

We are looking forward to working with the Sea Festival events next summer and helping out with the swimming races & such.  (As timers, etc., not as potential rescue victims if we actually tried to get back in the water and swim!)

The Alumni Luau & Dance is firmed up for July 14th at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club.

Long Beach is bidding to host the Special Olympics.  If we get it, this would be a great involvement opportunity for our members.  When else can you be called a SOB and it’s met as a complement?  (Special Olympics Booster)  We could help out with the aquatics portions & such.  (L.A. is bidding for the 2016 Olympics, and if they get them, we could also try to get involved with that.)

Kathy Coulter is our Wellness Committee V.P.  Please contact her if needed.  (She’s listed in the roster.)

Lifeguard Paul Dunning made a presentation on how he and Lifeguard John Pearce got involved in training lifeguards for the City of Playa in Ecuador.  Now there is an outreach program for the Long Beach Lifeguards!  Great Job guys!

The “Lecture” section of our mixer was a presentation by the Lifeguard Swift Water Rescue Team.  It was impressive!  The training and professionalism that makes up this dedicated group is great to see.  This is an expanding effort that ties in with growing State & National mutual aid response capabilities.

(Of course, “some” of the old Alumni members started talking about how “back in our day” we didn’t have any fancy equipment, we just used dug-out canoes and coconuts for floats . . . . .          Gratefully they eventually went back to the bar.)

Our next B of D meeting will be the “normal” third Friday of the month, January 19th 2007!at Busters-8am.  We’ll see how many show up when the bar is closed!
